UNESCO World Heritage Site of Modernism in Lower Saxony

The Triennial of the Modernism wants to establish a network of German World Heritage Sites of the Modernism in the medium term -
From 2022, the Fagus factory in Alfeld, Lower Saxony, not far from Hildesheim, will be a new associate partner:
The factory building, constructed by the architect and Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius, was built in 1911 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. It is regarded worldwide as the original building of the Modernism.

Architecture and offers

The architecture of the Fagus factory was the first to take into account the need for light, air and clarity. The construction of glass and steel and the column-free, fully glazed corners give the building a weightless elegance that was exceptional for factories at the time. With an outstanding steel and glass architecture, the architect succeeded in giving a medium-sized company a completely unusual new appearance that deviated from the traditional.

Fagus shoe lasts have been produced in this living monument for over 100 years. Today, this production is complemented by measuring technology and fire protection systems in the GreCon division. Exciting information about the living monument awaits visitors to the Fagus-Gropius exhibition in the former shoe last warehouse. The eventful exhibition covers an area of 3,000 square metres and provides information about the company's history, the architecture and restoration of the factory as well as the shoe fashion trends of a century.

Other national and international World Heritage sites can be discovered at the UNESCO Visitor Centre in the historic Spänehaus. Factory tours offer eventful insights behind the scenes of the World Heritage Site, into production. The Fagus Gallery invites visitors to a variety of special exhibitions.
