17.12.2022: Finissage of the fifth part of the exhibition

Release and workshop talk on the special issue of DOCOMOMO Journal "Modern Movement in Ukraine".

Save-the-date: On December 17, starting at 3:30 p.m., the finissage of the five-part exhibition series "Modernism in Ukraine" will take place at BHROX bauhaus reuse on Ernst-Reuter-Platz. As the formal conclusion of this year's Triennial festival, the event will be another highlight of the Berlin program. In the context of a release workshop, the thematic booklet on Ukraine published by DOCOMOMO International will be presented. Under the title "Multiple Modernities in Ukraine", the issue also deals with the architectural heritage in Ukraine, which is massively threatened by the war.

Program and framework

The presentation will be framed by the finissage of the fifth chapter of the exhibition series on buildings and roots of Modernism from Kharkiv to Lviv shown at BHROX bauhaus reuse. The exhibition series is also featured in a 12-page themed section in the Journal, introduced by an article by Robert K. Huber and Ben Buschfeld, the two curators and organizers of the Berlin program of Triennial of Modernism. Here you will find a preview of individual articles.

The exhibition series on Modernism in Ukraine, curated and organized by Robert Huber and zukunftsgeraeusche GbR and produced by Peter Winter, was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB). It is presented by Triennial of Modernism in Berlin in cooperation with DOCOMOMO international and ICOMOS.*

[The acronym DOCOMOMO stands for a global network of around 3,000 experts organized into 79 national chapters dedicated to the "Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Neighborhoods of the Modern Movement. The abbreviation ICOMOS stands for the "International Council on Monuments and Sites": The non-governmental, transnational organization advises UNESCO on issues relating to the protection of monuments and cultural assets. The two organizations have formed a strategic triangular partnership since 2022 with the Triennial of Modernism.]

The final chapter of the exhibition series, shown at Berlin's Festival Headquarters on Ernst-Reuter-Platz, focuses on the late or postmodern socialist period in Ukraine and its significance for the development of Ukrainian architecture. The fifth section of the exhibition, put together in cooperation with Ukrainian architectural historian Ievgeniia Gubkina, includes recent photographic works by Pavlo Dorogoy showing buildings and facilities in Kiev, Kharkiv and several other cities in the region, documenting not only the architecture but also the war damage in the areas, some of which were fought over and others recaptured.

Conclusion of the festival season 2022

The event on December 17, 2022 also concludes the fourth festival edition of Triennial of Modernism in Berlin. The mostly free program in the three cities of Berlin, Dessau and Weimar offered professional audiences and the interested general public the opportunity to experience Modernism and its development in its full range and complexity.

But even after the end of the current festival program in December, the ideas, goals and cooperations will continue: The networks of Modernism in Germany and Central Europe, including Ukraine, newly formed within the framework of the Triennial of Modernism 2022 and presented at the Opening event, are to be further developed and expanded in the coming years.
