Docomomo International

Partner of the European Triennial of Modernism (ETOM)

The Triennial der Modernism / Triennial of Modernism has applied for funding at the EU level to create a Europe-wide network of various modernist actors on different institutional levels. The plan is to lay some of the foundations in 2022 heading for joint programs 2025. In order to strengthen this concern and to ensure an even broader anchoring in science and research, a strategic partnership was established with Icomos Europe, the Goethe Institute and Docomomo International ...

About Docomomo

DOCOMOMO International is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the documentation and conservation of buildings, sites and neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement. Since its creation in 1988, DOCOMOMO International has experienced a rapid growth, establishing itself as a major player not only in the realm of conservation, but also in the broader field of architectural culture. The pluralist, interdisciplinary nature of DOCOMOMO International, due to its ability to bring together historians, architects, town-planners, landscape architects, conservationists, teachers, students and public officials, has been a strong asset.

The main goals of DOCOMOMO International are:

  • to bring the significance of the architecture of the Modern Movement to the attention of the public, the authorities, the professionals and the educational community.
  • to identify and promote the surveying of the works of the Modern Movement.
  • to promote the conservation and (re)use of buildings and sites of the Modern Movement.
  • to oppose destruction and disfigurement of significant works.
  • to foster and disseminate the development of appropriate techniques and methods of conservation and adaptive (re)use.
  • to attract funding for documentation conservation and (re)use
  • to explore and develop new ideas for the future of a sustainable built environment based on the past experiences of the Modern Movement

At present, DOCOMOMO International includes 78 national working parties and over 3,000 members worldwide (www.docomomo.com). As a globally acting NGO, DOCOMOMO International provides a huge academic and professional network to facilitate an exchange of knowledge, ideas and needs between higher education and enterprises in the architectural and urban contemporary heritage field. DOCOMOMO International supports this exchange with the biannual International DOCOMOMO Conference (IDC), and in particular through its peer-reviewed open access DOCOMOMO Journal (www.docomomojournal.com) and other thematic publications.
